Based on the libretto by Antonio Palomba, who later became a prolific Neapolitan librettist, “Horace” was performed for the first time in Naples at the Teatro Nuovo in the Carnival of 1737, when Auletta had already been maestro di cappella of the Prince of Belvedere for some time, and tells the story of the reunion between Horace, a gentleman from Livorno, and his wife Ginevra, lovers hindered by family and away from fate. All dropped into the comic context of a day at the Venetian palace, where the music lessons of the maestro Lamberto alternate with theatrical engagements, real or fictitious, and carnival masquerades.
