The Operas of the 2022 edition
19th July – 6th August
The programme for the 48th edition of the Festival della Valle d’Itria is the first by our new artistic director Sebastian F. Schwarz. The festival is held in Martina Franca in the usual summer period, from the 19th July to the 6th August 2022.
Five operas, for a journey through time spanning from the 17th century to present day: Le joueur (1929) by Sergej Prokof’ev, Beatrice di Tenda (1833) by Vincenzo Bellini, Il Xerse (1655) by Francesco Cavalli, La scuola de’ gelosi (1778) by Antonio Salieri and the world premiere Opera italiana (2010) by Nicola Campogrande.

“Fiat lux”
17th July – 5th August 2021
The 47th edition of the Festival della Valle d’Itria will take place in Martina Franca during the customary summer period.
The programme sketches a clear historical and cultural itinerary starting from the Neapolitan Baroque of Alessandro Scarlatti and Nicola Porpora, passing through Haydn’s Viennese Classicism, and finally reaching Schubert. But the proposed works open up to interpretations, to connections and references to today’s human and social conditions, starting from the most obvious example: “Fiat lux” is a new beginning, stemming from the pressing need for an authentic re-creation of the world…
The Words of the Artistic Director
Sebastian F. Schwarz
«Since opera was invented in Italy in the late 1500s we continue to recitar cantando, to tell the tales of our today or to transform the myths, literature and history into librettos and scores to then entrust singer-actors and musicians with them, concentrating all the art forms – visual, figurative, performative – onto that big stage that means the world.
And yet, in Italy we see little of this. Despite the over 40.000 operas that have supposedly been written so far (no one has ever convincingly been able to count them), astonishingly, for years and years the same about 30 operas seem to be rehashed over and over again as if our audiences didn’t ask for more»…

The operas of the 2020 edition
The 46th edition of the Festival will take place in Martina Franca from July 14th to August 2nd 2020.
The operatic titles that will be staged in 2020 will be: Gli amanti sposi by Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, La rappresaglia by Saverio Mercadante and Leonora by Ferdinando Paër. A choice in line with the decades-long artistic project of the Festival, between rarities and rediscoveries, with the return of twentieth-century historical title never seen again in the contemporary age, and two nineteenth-century rarities. These titles will also be accompanied by Niccolò Piccinni’s interlude Il perucchiere, destined for the successful “Opera in masseria” initiative.
